Rockstar released new Grand Theft Auto VI footage on 27 August, and it did it somewhere nobody expected — Netflix first, six hours before everyone else.

It has now aired. This page was written before it and has been rewritten after it. What we predicted is below, marked against what actually happened.

## The timing — as it happened

✅ **CONFIRMED**

| | When | Where |
| ------------ | -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Premiere | Thursday, August 27 · 3:00 PM ET | Netflix |
| Wide release | Thursday, August 27 · 9:00 PM ET | Rockstar's YouTube channel and rockstargames.com |

The six-hour Netflix window happened exactly as announced.

## What it turned out to be

✅ **CONFIRMED**

- **Runtime: 26 minutes 48 seconds.** Most coverage rounds this to "26 minutes" or "27 minutes." It's 1,608 seconds — we checked the player.
- **It is gameplay.** Rockstar's own description: "Captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5."
- **14 licensed songs**, opening on Birdman and Lil Wayne and closing on Elderbrook and Bob Moses.
- It is **age-restricted on YouTube** and carries **no captions of any kind**.

## What we said to watch for — and what happened

This page listed four things worth watching for. All four now have answers.

### 1\. "Any UI on screen — a minimap, a wanted level, a weapon wheel."

✅ **Answered: yes.** The weapon wheel appears during play. The Wanted system shows **six stars** — the classic maximum, restored after GTA V's five. An item wheel supplies masks during robberies. Slow-motion aiming highlights points on enemies. This was gameplay, not a trailer.

### 2\. "Named locations, especially anything in Port Gellhorn or Ambrosia."

🔷 **Answered: three new Vice City locations, and nothing at all for Port Gellhorn or Ambrosia.**

New names, all **🔷 REPORTED** — identified by outlets watching the video, never published by Rockstar in writing:

- **Effluvia** — a rooftop bar, where Jason and Lucia meet Brian Heder and Lori (\~9:50)
- **Bayside** — a Vice City neighbourhood, named aloud by Lucia (\~12:32)
- **Megamundo Headquarters** — HQ of a satirical in-universe TV channel, and a mission location (\~20:50)

⚠️ **These are not on our map and will not be.** Only officially confirmed place names go on the map. A line of spoken dialogue that three websites agree on is still not Rockstar publishing a name. They're in the database, labelled.

**Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia got one new screenshot each and no description.** They remain the two thinnest regions in official material, exactly as they were in August.

### 3\. "Any mention of an online or multiplayer mode."

✅ **Answered: not a word.** Twenty-six minutes and forty-eight seconds, no mention of GTA Online, no multiplayer, no date, no Shark Cards.

That's not silence by omission — it's silence with a stage. Rockstar had the floor and chose not to use it. Their pre-order Newswire still calls Grand Theft Auto VI "a single player experience," and nothing in the showcase departs from that.

✅ Also stated: the single-player game launches with **no microtransactions**, and Rockstar says **no generative AI** was used in development.

### 4\. "Any money, shop, or property interface."

✅ **Answered, partly.** Robberies, fencing, and physical car theft all appear. The deeper economy material — money gating story progression, vehicle security tiers, the WAINK appraisal app — came from **IGN's separate private demo at Rockstar North**, not from this video. That distinction matters and we keep it in [the money article](https://crookedtide.com/gta-6-money-what-we-know/).

## Why Netflix?

Rockstar never explained it, and we're still not going to invent a reason.

What can be said factually: it was a first, and the practical result is that the showcase is harder to watch than any previous Rockstar reveal. Netflix needs a subscription. The YouTube version needs a sign-in. Neither has captions. For a piece of marketing, that's a lot of friction — and it's the part of this story nobody covered.

## We owe you a correction on this page

This article promised a full breakdown the same day, published before the 9pm YouTube release, sent to everyone on the email list.

**That didn't happen.** No same-day breakdown went up. If you joined the list for it, you were waiting for something that never arrived, and there's no version of that which isn't our fault.

The full scene-by-scene breakdown is being published now, late. We're not going to pretend the timing was fine.

**Grand Theft Auto VI** releases November 19, 2026 on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. Standard is $79.99, Ultimate is $99.99, and the [Vintage Vice City Pack](https://crookedtide.com/vintage-vice-city-pack-guide/) is free with any purchase made before November 20.

### Changelog

**5 September 2026** — Rewritten from preview to record. The pre-event article listed runtime, whether it contained gameplay, and whether it showed new locations as ⚠️ NOT CONFIRMED; all three are answered above. Corrected "70 official screenshots" to 99\. Removed the claim that Rockstar had shown no hands-on gameplay footage. Added the six-star Wanted system, the three new reported Vice City locations, the no-microtransactions and no-generative-AI statements, and the verified 26:48 runtime. Acknowledged the same-day breakdown we promised and did not deliver.
